Concrete Scan to Locate Voids at Large Distribution Center - Waltham, Massachusetts

Project Manager, Peter Kessinger, of GPRS-Boston was contacted to perform a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) investigation at a former USPS processing and distribution facility in Waltham, MA. The client requested to have all of the sub-surface voids located before they started with a parking garage construction project at this location. The client had concerns about weight distribution, and concerns about potential voids under the existing slab at the project site.

The images above show 2 of the voids (shown in red) that were located around the building columns at the job-site.

Our investigation resulted in the location of approximately 35 voids around building columns, and around a few other isolated areas. With this knowledge, the client was able to continue with their project. By knowing the location of the voids, the client was also able to ensure that the construction project would be successful, and that the job-site would be safe during the construction process. Ground Penetrating Radar is non-destructive, non-hazardous, time efficient and gives immediate results.
