GPR Used for Rebar Locating - Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada

The Sault Ste. Marie Powerhouse is a Federal Heritage Buildings Review Office structure and efforts are currently underway to conserve this historic building (http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/lhn-nhs/on/ssmarie/plan/bulletin/02.aspx). As part of this work, engineers needed to perform a structural assessment of the facility and how it is built, but how do you gather this information for concrete slabs in a building that is over 120 years old? The combination of previous rehabs, undocumented changes, and simple time create a need for a means other than the existing plans to determine the make-up of the existing structure. They contacted GPRS Enterprises to perform ground penetrating radar scans to provide a non-destructive means of “seeing” the layout of the rebar within the slab.

GPRS Enterprises’ mobilized to the site and was able to quickly scan the slabs and provide the engineers with the structural steel layout of the concrete slabs within the structure. This technology is often confused with concrete x-ray, but is able to provide the required information without any of the radiation concerns and is able to provide it more quickly and cheaply. If you need to “see” into a concrete slab or have a need for any of our other services such as oil tank locating or private utility mark-outs, please contact Jim James at 647-339-1265 or jim.james@gp-radar.ca.
