Monitoring Well Located for Environmental Firm - South Charleston, West Virginia

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. of West Virginia was contacted by an environmental firm to locate a lost monitoring well. The contractor had information which suggested that there was a well next to the structure at the job-site location. However, it was believed that the well had been covered, and lost over time. The firm did not have any records on hand which could have suggested that the wells had been removed from the property. Therefore, to assist them with locating this well, the environmental company called GPRS Project Manager, William Johnson. William quickly mobilized to the job-site, and started to survey the area in question.

Lost Monitoring Well Located by GPRS - South Charleston, WV  Private Utility Scan GPR West Virginia

Prior to starting the scan, we were also made aware that the area likely had several underground electrical lines, and potentially a fiber optic line. Due to the fact that there was heavy rain on the day of the project, we decided to start the scan using our RD7000 (line locater) to assist us with identifying the utility lines. After this, we then used a Schonstedt GA-52Cx Magnetic Locator (Magnetometer) to attempt to locate the monitoring well lid. Due to the weather, we were unable to use GPR for this project, however, in order to keep this project on schedule, and to avoid delays, other means of equipment was used.

As a result of our scan, we were able to provide our customer with information on the location of the electrical lines on the property. Additionally, we were able to positively identify the location of the missing well (using our Magnetometer). The results of the scan indicated that the well was located between 6” and 2’ under the surface. Thanks to GPRS and these helpful results, the environmental company was able to safely dig up the well, and proceed with their project without any delays.
