Prior to saw cutting concrete floor slabs, it’s imperative to have information on what lies beneath the surface. In many instances during construction of buildings, conduits & other utilities will be placed in the actual pour of the concrete floor or just beneath the concrete floor. It’s essential to have any possible conduits identified prior to saw cutting to ensure the safety of the workers involved with the project.
A general contractor had to saw cut the floor in numerous areas throughout an existing medical facility that was being renovated in Dearborn MI. The contractor new there were conduits in & under the slab since they could see multiple conduits entering the floor. They needed to know the paths of the conduits or any other obstructions prior to having a saw cutting company begin the cutting process. The contractor couldn’t afford to have any existing utilities compromised during the demolition. Ground Penetrating Radar Systems of the Ann Arbor & Detroit areas was contacted to conduct a GPR investigation of the floor to locate any utilities sub-surface prior to saw cutting. GPRS was able to scan the different areas with a 1600 MHz high resolution antenna & determine if any live power was passing through using the RD8000 (Radio Detection Device). They marked the paths of existing conduits passing through the proposed areas directly on the surface. The GPRS technician then walked the site contact through the building explaining everything they had located. It’s important to have everyone on the same page as far as what the markings are explaining. The general contractor was able to continue the project without having to worry about existing utilities being compromised & anyone on the job being hurt. All the cutting was completed in a timely fashion due to the expertise of the GPRS technician.
