Ground Penetrating Radar Systems Inc.

Environmental Firm Relies on GPRS for Critical Project
- Madison, WI

Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. – GPRS – of Wisconsin was contacted by a nationwide environmental firm to investigate an area to identify a possible underground storage tank remaining on the property. The property was a large high rise building in the heart of University of Wisconsin – Madison. The purpose of identifying if an underground storage tank remained was due to a possible sale of the complex. GPRS was able to mobilize, scan, and produce a full report within 24 hours of receiving the call! GPRS scanned the area and identified abandoned piping, but the GPR equipment did not detect similar features to that of an underground storage tank. The abandoned piping is believed to be an old electrical conduit that was pulled and no longer in use. Ground penetrating radar is a great tool to scan areas for utilities, UST’s voids, and other unknowns on your site. GPR is also great for mapping post tension cables, rebar, and conduits, including PVC pipes. GPRS’s arsenal of tools can be tuned for your specific project. This now includes sewer camera inspection in Wisconsin! Call for details!

GPR Scanning for Soil Boring Clearance – Madison, WI

GPRS, Inc. was contacted by a large environmental company to scan several areas for underground utilities, underground storage tanks, and other items prior to commencing soil boring locations. GPRS scanned roughly ½ acre with ground penetrating radar (400MHz GPR antenna by GSSI with SIR 4000 display unit) and Radio Detection 7000 equipment. GPRS tied onto any utilities above ground to trace them to their final location to ensure the utilities did not cross proposed drilling locations/soil boring locations. GPRS was able to see up to 4’-4.5’ in depth on this site. This allowed for a culvert to be able to be detected that was not on any site maps that could be obtained by the environmental company. GPRS cleared one location, where if GPRS did not come out on site, would have led to a utility strike! See picture below to see how close utilities ran to the proposed boring location!
