Old High Middle School Students Gain Hands-On Experience with 3D Laser Scanning

The original sections of Old High Middle School in Bentonville, Arkansas, lacked accurate as-built documentation. This is an all too common challenge for structures as old as this one, which first opened in 1928. Before any renovation work could begin, precise spatial data was essential. To address this, Existing Conditions a GPRS company deployed 3D laser scanning technology to capture approximately 40,000 square feet of the school with high accuracy.
While on-site, Project Managers Kelvin Jolalpa and Wesley Imboden provided Old High Middle School students with an in-depth look at the role of LiDAR-based scanning in the AEC industry. Using the Leica RTC360, students observed how reality capture technology transforms physical environments into detailed, actionable digital 3D Revit models.
"The presentation went extremely well, and I’m grateful to have been part of this opportunity," said Jolalpa.
By integrating advanced 3D laser scanning techniques with hands-on education, GPRS and Existing Conditions are bridging the gap between theoretical learning and real-world application. The initiative not only shows the importance of accurate as-built documentation but also introduces the next generation to the evolving technologies shaping the built environment.
