Task

The University of Oklahoma’s Lloyd Noble Center was upgrading its facility with a new LED video display over the player’s entrance tunnel. GPRS was called to capture precise as-built data of the player’s entrance tunnel for precise structural and safety engineering.

PROBLEM

  • Large LED displays can weigh several thousand pounds, making their proper support system a critical safety factor.
  • Engineers must calculate anchor points, load-bearing capacity, vibration factors, electrical connections, and ventilation clearances when designing the structure to ensure it can safely support the substantial weight and dimensions of the screen.

Solution

  • GPRS used the Leica RTC360 laser scanner to document existing site conditions, capturing structural details with 2–4-millimeter accuracy for precise structural engineering.
  • Data was captured in a point cloud and was used to generate 2D CAD drawings and a 3D BIM model for structural engineers and contractors.
  • The accurate as built data GPRS provided was used to plan the engineering of the mounting structure and connection points.

Benefits

  • GPRS provided accurate as-built data to ensure proper structural engineering of the LED video display, giving the contractor a detailed design plan for safe and precise installation.
  • Accurate as-built data streamlined communication, collaboration, and execution, enabling precise structural planning that reduced risks and improved safety during installation in a high-traffic area.
