PROJECT APPLICATION
ASK
Task
Curb-to-curb scan and map miles of utilities under a roadway across multiple cities to support the strategic planning of a large-scale power cable installation.
PROBLEM
• The client needed a large area to be scanned, spanning 5.4 miles between major power distribution hubs for an ongoing two-year project
• They also needed to identify any type of surface features that could be traced, whether it be manholes, gas meters, or hydrants for main electric line replacement
• This project involved significant traffic control in coordination with local law enforcement
• A utility strike in a major roadway can lead to traffic delays, service outages, costly repairs, and safety risks
Solution
• A GPRS Project Manager utilized an electromagnetic (EM) locator and ground penetrating radar (GPR) to locate every utility, including communications, electric, water, gas, and storm and sewer
• Night work was done at busy intersections to avoid daytime traffic disruptions and safety issues
• GPRS Project Managers are trained in our SIM process, utilizing multiple technologies and methods to deliver the best results, regardless of scanning location
Benefits
• The scanning process revealed that abandoned utilities were left behind after a tornado demolished a nearby street a decade ago, despite new houses being built, which could have posed safety risks and costly delays
• We completed the project within their expected timeframe, reducing downtime
• The utility data was uploaded into SiteMap®, so that the contractor can access, download, and share with everyone on their team, from any mobile device 24//7
