Highlights
THE BOTTOM LINE
2D CAD drawings provided the contractor precise data to identify high and low spots, confirm that the slab aligned with design tolerances, and address any deviations before additional construction progresses.

Deliverables
The Mapping & Modeling Team used Autodesk Revit to trace over the point cloud data and create 2D floor plans. The team exported the files into AutoCAD 2D drawings showing Floor Flatness and Slab to Slab Elevations for the client. 2D sections were also created of the elevator shaft to show the elevation changes per floor.
PROJECT APPLICATION
3D Laser Scanning Concrete for Floor Flatness and Slab to Slab Elevations
ASK
Task
GPRS provided 3D laser scanning for a concrete contractor in Brooklyn, New York. The client needed as-built data for 12 interior floors and 2 roofs to check the accuracy of the concrete work. Using the scan results, GPRS created 2D CAD drawings to verify floor flatness and slab elevations after the concrete was poured and finished.
PROBLEM
The client desired to verify that the concrete they poured was within the tolerance of their contractual obligation and provide documentation to the property owners. They wanted to quickly turn around this documentation so the client could keep this project on schedule.
Solution
- 3D laser scanning can accurately measure and verify floor flatness and slab elevations after concrete has been poured. This ensures the surface meets project specifications and industry standards, such as ASTM E1155 for floor flatness (FF) and floor levelness (FL) ratings.
- GPRS Project Managers utilized Leica laser scanners to capture as-built data from 12 floors and 2 roofs of the building. The Project Manager collected millimeter-accurate measurements totaling over 162,000 sq. ft. in a few days’ time.
- The GPRS Mapping & Modeling team created 2D CAD drawings to verify the concrete contractor’s work was within tolerance and delivered them to the client within the proposed 10 business days.
Benefits
- With 3D laser scan technology, data collection and analysis was completed in a fraction of the time it would have taken to manually measure and verify the client’s work.
- The 2D CAD drawings helped verify the as-built conditions. If the floor flatness analysis showed error exceeding tolerance, GPRS would then be able to calculate the amount of materials needed by the client to address the issue.
- 3D laser scanning helped prevent costly rework, confirmed compliance with architectural and engineering requirements, and added quality control in the project.
