PROJECT APPLICATION
ASK
Task
Locate and map a previously damaged, 15,000-volt electrical conduit and other utilities in and around a correctional facility where a trench was being dug to install a new power duct.
PROBLEM
- A previous contractor, operating off outdated as-built documentation, had struck and damaged the 15,000-volt conduit
- The existing plans showed the conduit being located 20 feet away from where it really was
- The new contractor needed an accurate map of buried utilities in the proposed excavation area
Solution
- A GPRS Project Manager utilized an electromagnetic (EM) locator and ground penetrating radar (GPR) to obtain the accurate location for all buried utilities in the project area
- Utility locations and depth estimations were marked on the ground to clearly indicate where it was safe to trench
- The geolocated and layered utility locating data was uploaded into SiteMap®
Benefits
- The contractor was able to safely trench without causing further damage to the penitentiary’s buried infrastructure
- Prison personnel and any future contractors will be able to reference the accurate, complete infrastructure data for future O&M
