PROJECT APPLICATION
ASK
Task
Inspect a strip mall’s storm and sewer systems to uncover the source of a foul smell in one of the stores.
PROBLEM
- A tenant was complaining of a foul smell emanating from their business, and there was no obvious source for the odor
- With multiple businesses of various types, the plaza’s storm and sewer systems were complex and not fully mapped
- The smell could discourage patrons from visiting the businesses in the strip mall
Solution
- GPRS utilized our NASSCO-certified sewer inspection services, including CCTV camera-equipped push-fed scopes, smoke testing, and dye tracing to inspect the property’s sewer, storm, and grease trap systems
- The sonde – instrument probe – attached to the push-fed sewer scope allowed the Project Manager to map the systems at the same time they were inspected for defects
- The Project Manager discovered the likely source of the foul smell: an improper connection between the complaining tenant’s sanitary system and the grease trap for a neighboring, vacant restaurant. The smells were emanating from the buildup of sewage in the grease trap manhole/vault directly outside the back door of the tenant that was complaining of the odor
Benefits
- By locating the improper sewer connection, GPRS ensured that the property owner could properly reconnect the system to the correct sanitation point and remedy the smell
- The accurate, complete map of the property’s storm and sewer systems created through this inspection will mitigate the risk of future problems, such as additional illegal connections and cross bores
