Task

Scan behind and around a stone block embedded within the wall of the 200-year-old Christ Episcopal Church to attempt to verify the existing of a time capsule.

PROBLEM

  • The church had no detailed documentation verifying the time capsule’s existence – they were relying on an old newspaper article that described its size, construction, and location
  • The church’s exterior walls were being renovated and restored, but any examination of the block could not disturb or damage the masonry

Solution

  • GPRS deployed an arsenal of non-destructive subsurface investigation technologies, including a concrete scanning ground penetrating radar (GPR) antenna, to examine the stone block and surrounding masonry without damaging the structure
  • The Project Manager obtained evidence which indicated a metallic object fitting the description of the time capsule embedded within the wall

Benefits

  • The data collected by GPRS will help the church and its partners create a plan for safely extricating the stone block from the wall to confirm the existence of the time capsule
  • The project received local media coverage, which will likely assist the church in its efforts to raise funds for additional, planned restoration and renovation projects
