Case Study: TruePoint 3D Laser Scans Hard Rock Stadium For Mixed Reality Super Bowl Feature We would like to thank The Famous Group, the Miami Dolphins and the Hard Rock Stadium for allowing us to be a part of this project.” - Ryan Hacker, President of TruePoint Laser Scanning Location: Hard Rock Stadium, Miami, Florida Task: TruePoint 3D laser scanned the Hard Rock Stadium for use in a mixed-reality experience during the 2020 Super Bowl on February 2. Mixed reality is a blend of physical and virtual worlds that includes both real and computer-generated objects. The two worlds are "mixed" together to create a realistic environment. Challenge: It was important to the client that the existing spatial layout was captured with great accuracy. When generating the mixed reality experience, computer-generated objects must precisely interact with the physical environment to sell the realism. Solution: The upper and lower stands, field topography, LED display screens, LED ribbon around stadium, two Hard Rock Stadium signs and roof structure were documented with a survey-grade Leica P40 ScanStation. In two days onsite, 172 laser scans of precise point cloud data was captured. TruePoint’s team of in-house engineers quickly generated a 3D Revit model for the client. The client planned to use Autodesk Maya, a 3D computer animation, modeling and rendering software to create an augmented reality (AR) simulation. Deliverables: TruePoint delivered point cloud files in .rcs format, a 3D Revit Model, and a FBX file. The client was also able to view the model progress using Autodesk A360, a web-browser application that allows engineers and project teams to work together more easily in an online workspace. Added Value: “Everything we do at TruePoint Laser Scanning is highly custom. This client wanted portions of the stadium modeled in LOD 100 and portions modeled in LOD 300. Our deliverables were customized, so the client is only paying for what they need,” Aaron Hunt, Lead Technical Manager. 3D Laser Scanning a 59 Acre Wastewater Treatment Plant

GPRS was tasked with 3D laser scanning the existing conditions of this $417 million Wastewater Treatment Plant and producing an LOD 350 Revit model to plan for future expansion.
59 acres and 27 buildings were 3D laser scanned to provide complete as-built documentation of a Colorado Wastewater Treatment Plant. This client is the largest water reclamation provider in the Rocky Mountain West, serving 1.8 million people in a 715 square-mile area. GPRS was tasked with 3D laser scanning the existing conditions of this $417 million facility and producing an LOD 350 Revit model to assist with on-going operations and plan for future expansion.

THE BOTTOM LINE GPRS was tasked with 3D laser scanning the existing conditions of this $417 million Wastewater Treatment Plant and producing an LOD 350 Revit model to plan for future expansion. INDUSTRY Wastewater Treatment Plant SERVICE 3D Laser Scanning, Mapping & Modeling LOCATION Denver, Colorado PROJECT APPLICATION GPRS specializes in BIM and VDC management for wastewater treatment plants, utilizing 3D laser scanning technology to create detailed digital models. Task 59 acres and 27 buildings were 3D laser scanned to provide complete as-built documentation of a Colorado Wastewater Treatment Plant. PROBLEM The client needed the fastest way to document 59 acres and 27 buildings with the highest level of quality. Each building was unique and needed to be documented and modeled to plan for expansion, including pumping stations, sludge digester, thickener, tank reclamation, purification systems, aeration, primary and secondary settling, maintenance facilities and visitor center. The client had their own laser scanner, but did not have the manpower and resources to complete the project timely. Solution GPRS has a highly integrated and highly motivated team of laser scanning professionals. 59 acres of campus was 3D laser scanned in a 4-month period, sometimes with up to 10 Project Managers on site at one time. GPRS Project Managers captured 2,990 color scans and an in-house team of engineers produced an LOD 350 Revit model of the interior and exterior of 27 buildings of a 59 Acre Wastewater Treatment Plant including architectural and structural details, MEP and process piping ½" and above, valves, flanges, equipment detail and location, stairwells, railings, closets, restrooms and janitor rooms. The client also requested EdgeWise files, so the GPRS Mapping & Modeling Team modeled all piping, valves, flanges, ducts, conduit and framing and organized it in layers in accordance with the client’s naming conventions for location, plant process and material specifications. The client also used the BIM model to determine if the existing drawings reflected actual site conditions. Benefits 3D laser scanning enables clients to add, modify, validate and document their design digitally. 3D laser scanning allowed the plant to have a full scope of the existing conditions before renovations were made to the facility.

Caption: GPRS completed long-range, high-resolution laser scanning of a historic building in Philadelphia. Quote from GPRS Team Member: “The scanning and modeling teams worked around the clock, sometimes 7 days a week, to complete this project. The hard work paid off and we’re thrilled with the result – one of our most highly-detailed architectural 3D models to date.” - Nate Baker, GPRS Service Line Leader – 3D Laser Scanning Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Task: GPRS Laser Scanning developed an as-built model to aid this client in converting a historic building into a luxury hotel. GPRS provided 3D scanning services for a 250,000 square-foot building, including the exterior facades, floors 1-4, basement, roof, penthouses and mechanical spaces. GPRS’ team of in-house architects, engineers and CAD Technicians delivered point cloud files, a 3D model, and TruViews to the client. Challenge: The client was challenged with acquiring highly detailed architectural data including walls, ceilings, floors, stairs, balustrades, colonnades etc., and structural data including exposed columns and beams to design the renovation. Due to the size of the building and the ornate features, traditional methods would have taken months to complete and would not have been as accurate or anywhere near as detailed. Solutions: The GPRS scan technician completed 1,680 laser scans in 15 days (an average of over 100 scans per day!) with a Leica P20 ScanStation. A 3D Revit model with varying degrees of LOD 200 and LOD 300 modeling was generated by GPRS’ engineers based on the client’s instruction. Some areas of the building, such as the main lobby and exterior facades, required finer modeling detail over 350. This was deciphered through several project scope conferences between GPRS and the client. Deliverables: GPRS delivered point cloud files (.rcs file formats), a 3D Revit model and TruViews to the client. GPRS worked closely with the project architect to review the model in real time utilizing BIM360 software for shared viewing of the model in its current state throughout the 2-month project. Added Value: 3D laser scanning aids the process of architectural design from the early stages of site documentation and conceptualization, to monitoring construction progress and verifying as-built accuracy. Aside from the benefits of quickly and accurately creating detailed as-built drawings of a site, the data acquired through laser scanning has continued value throughout the project's life. Laser scanning and modeling is exploding in the AEC industry. 3D laser scanning creates a smooth BIM workflow, from the acquisition of data to a polished 3D model. Scan to BIM services are becoming more popular as the need for intelligent 3D CAD models grows.
