A specialty compound manufacturer was upgrading three manufacturing lines at its plant as part of a larger capital improvement plan.The facility was originally built in the 1980's and has expanded several times over the years.Multiple levels in the facility needed scanned at a very high level of detail, capturing structural, architectural, MEP and civil elements, along with a site plan.The following areas required 3D laser scanning services:On the ground production level, GPRS captured extruder areas for lines 1-3 and process equipment.On the mezzanine level, GPRS captured mixers for each extrusion line.On the second floor, GPRS captured blender areas for lines 1-3, process equipment, air handling equipment, and additional rooms.Outside, GPRS captured the tank farm and silo farm. GPRS provides 3D laser scanning services for facility upgrades and expansions, delivering 2-4mm accurate dimensions of building infrastructure: structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing features; furnaces, equipment, conduit and piping. With an accurate, comprehensive data set, plant engineers can install new equipment and upgrade the three manufacturing lines. 3D Laser Scanning Before Concrete Pour Saved Client Thousands

The deliverables provided will be an asset for years to come as they can be referenced for any future coring or drilling needs showing where everything embedded in the slab was prior to pouring.
The client was in active build of an eight-story apartment complex in Houston, Texas. Each floor had five to six concrete pours scheduled on specific dates over an 8-month period. GPRS 3D laser scanned each area to capture the existing conduit, post-tensioning, rebar plan and sleeves prior to the slab being poured. This allowed the client to check the existing conditions for any irregularities.

Location: Houston, Texas Task: The client was in active build of an eight-story apartment complex in Houston, Texas. Each floor had five to six concrete pours scheduled on specific dates over an 8-month period. This allowed the client to check the existing conditions for any irregularities. Challenge: The client was on a strict timeline and did not want delays in construction. They needed to quickly and accurate ensure that everything was in its correct location prior to pouring the slab. The client needed a 3D laser scanning company who could quickly mobilize to the site, conduct efficient laser scanning and provide point cloud data aligned to the design drawings within 24-48 hours. Solution: GPRS worked closely with the client. The scan technician mobilized to the site 1-2 times a week for 8 months and quickly captured the data without stalling the construction process. The scan technician set up the laser scanner at multiple locations around each slab and captured the data without disturbing the active construction site. GPRS’ team of in-house engineers quickly provided the point cloud alignment. The sub-centimeter point cloud data allowed the client to review the site conditions and make changes prior to the scheduled pour and without ever having to leave the office. Deliverable: GPRS’ Project Manager laser scanned each area and provided a colorized point cloud to the client. The colorized point cloud allowed the client to see color imagery, stitched over the point cloud to assess the area for misplaced sleeves, conduits and post-tension runs. This data was also aligned to the existing building plans to quickly find any issues. Added Value: The client relayed that GPRS saved them thousands of the dollars with just the first mobilization. They identified issues with the sleeve alignment from the home office and had them corrected prior to the slab being poured. Finding out that the sleeves were not in the correct location, even the day after the pour, would have cost the general contractor tens of thousands of dollars in coring costs alone. And if this problem would not have been discovered until framing and other elements went up could have cost exponentially more. LiDAR Survey Dimensions of a 6-Story Building

GPRS’ accurate measurements allowed the client to order dimensionally-correct windows for each specific opening, thus reducing any change orders for this project. The client can review the 6-story building and its openings in 3 separate deliverables: the point cloud, the 2D drawings, and the TruViews.

Location: Detroit, Michigan Task: To capture the dimensions of all the window openings on the building. Challenge: The building was a 6-story building with windows on all four sides. The height alone of a 6-story building can create enough challenges when obtaining accurate measurements of window dimensions. This project, however, presented additional challenges. For example, the exterior of the building was not easily accessible by lift or scaffolding due to its being located along a busy road with minimal right of way. Additionally, the other sides of the building also had obstacles which further limited access to the windows. Solutions: By utilizing laser scanning, a non-contact measurement tool, GPRS was able to capture the accurate dimensions of the window openings safely from the ground, as well as from other safe locations. Windowsills can sometimes be difficult to capture when scanning from the ground, but our scan technicians were able to set up on and scan from surrounding buildings and rooftops to ensure enough elevation to capture these features accurately for our client. And since laser scanning is not only safe and accurate, but also is extremely fast, the field work was limited to one day. Deliverable: GPRS provided our client with 2D elevations in AutoCAD, which included the dimensions of the edge of existing rough openings dictated by the limestone cladding. Additionally, we supplied our client with TruViews – 3D photographs overlaid on top of the point cloud, allowing for rudimentary measurements directly from the photos. The client can now view the building and its openings in 3 separate deliverables: the point cloud, the 2D drawings, and the TruViews. Added Value: Many times, in field measuring, there is an assumption made, after measuring several similar units, that others will likely be of the same dimensions. With laser scanning we can easily and accurately determine the dimensions of each opening individually. As is common with many older buildings, many of the openings of this building appeared to be the same size but, in fact, varied enough to cause potential problems. GPRS’ accurate measurements allowed the client to order dimensionally-correct windows for each specific opening, thus reducing any change orders for windows that did not fit perfectly the first time they were placed.
