As-Built Construction
As-builts provide an accurate record of a building or site’s existing conditions, including architectural, structural, utility, and MEP system dimensions, locations, and material specifications for reliable project planning.
Point Cloud of a Factory
Point Clouds
By representing spatial data as a collection of x, y, and z coordinates, point clouds deliver 2–4-millimeter accurate datasets of buildings, facilities, and sites that can be mined for information. This 3D dataset of existing site conditions can be processed into 3D BIM models, 3D meshes, and 2D CAD drawings.
BIM Modeling of a Infrastructure
BIM Modeling
3D BIM models deliver a geometrically accurate digital representation of a building or site, capturing infrastructure, spatial relationships, maintenance information, product models, as well as additional property and layer information. GPRS transforms point clouds into custom 3D BIM models and 3D mesh models at any level of detail, supplying a powerful tool to collaborate on a building’s design, construction, and operation.

3D Laser Scanning Services Used for Manufacturing Facility Expansion

The client was making a large investment in capital and equipment and needed reliable as-built data and a 3D BIM model to expedite the installation without rework.
A pet nutrition manufacturer was expanding its facility to increase the production of current products and add an additional packaging line. The 30-year-old company planned to invest $17.5 million in this expansion. GPRS conducted an as-built site survey and created a 3D BIM model for the facility expansion. We captured approximately 50,000 square feet of the dry mixing facility spanning 5 levels, including a meat slurry room, a batching area, an extruder room, a hammermill room, and several mechanical and electrical rooms. Precise point cloud data was captured for all architectural and structural features, equipment, conduit, and piping.

3D Laser Scanning Services Used for Manufacturing Facility Expansion Project Manager Insight: Our client planned this manufacturing facility expansion in two phases. The first phase will expand production from five to seven days a week. The second phase will add an additional packaging line. -- Karl Hofmeister, TruePoint Project Manager Location: Richmond, Indiana Task: A pet nutrition manufacturer was expanding its facility to increase the production of current products and add an additional packaging line. The 30-year-old company planned to invest $17.5 million in this expansion. TruePoint Laser Scanning conducted an as-built site survey and created a 3D BIM model for the facility expansion. TruePoint captured approximately 50,000 square feet of the dry mixing facility spanning 5 levels, including a meat slurry room, a batching area, an extruder room, a hammermill room and several mechanical and electrical rooms. TruePoint captured precise point cloud data of all architectural and structural features, equipment, conduit and piping. Challenge: No as built plans existed for the facility. The plant was complex, capturing the existing spatial data of the machinery, conduit and piping in a high level of detail was important to the plant engineers. There were many silos and machinery that needed to be worked around and could obstruct the view. The client was making a large investment in capital and equipment and needed reliable data to expedite the installation without rework. Solution: In two days on site, TruePoint’s experienced project managers 3D laser scanned the manufacturing facility with the Leica P50, Leica P40 and RTC 360 laser scanners. TruePoint’s in-house modeling team built an information-rich 3D BIM model for the client. Deliverable: The deliverables created for this project included an intensity map Autodesk Recap point cloud (.rcs file), LGS/JetStream Viewer files and a Revit 2019 LOD 300 3D model. The information-rich 3D model included: Basic structural elements including exposed columns, beams and structural bracing. Basic architectural elements including walls, doors, windows, floors and ceilings. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing piping 2" in diameter and above, showing valves on all pipes that were 2" and larger. Conduit runs were modeled as solid blocks. MEP Equipment including pumps, electrical boxes, silos and HVAC ductwork. Added Value: TruePoint 3D laser scanned another facility for this client earlier this year. We were contacted to provide accurate site data to plan for this facility expansion. By using laser scanning instead of traditional survey methods, TruePoint saved this client thousands of dollars in field survey work and drafting time, and provided greater detail than what would have otherwise been possible. With an accurate, comprehensive data set, plant engineers could install the new equipment and packaging line. TruePoint Laser Scanning is a leading provider of 3D laser scanning services in Indiana, delivering precise point cloud data, 2D drawings and 3D BIM models, using state-of-the-art equipment, software and processes. Location: Austin, Texas Task: The client desired to laser scan three 100-year old trees and include them in the design plans for a new development. GPRS 3D laser scanned the trees and provided the client with intensity map point cloud files and a 3D mesh of the trees for reality capture. This was GPRS’ second phase of laser scanning for this client. Challenge: The client could not accurately capture the location, exact dimensions and detail of the three trees. They needed laser scanning services to include the trees in the design plan. It was important to capture the existing conditions without damaging the tree trunks or limbs. Solutions: GPRS’ Texas office used a Leica C10 ScanStation to capture the three trees and the surrounding area. Accurate 3D measurements were captured in a few hours on site in a fast and environmentally friendly manner. Laser scanners are non-contact, they scan from tripods on the ground up to 300 yards, keeping the environment untouched. Deliverables: GPRS provided the client with intensity map point cloud files and 3D mesh of the trees. This can be pulled into an existing Revit or AutoCAD model and aligned with the design plan, as well as be used in reality capture software. Added Value: GPRS incorporated the first and second mobilization into the same coordinate system which allowed the separate projects to be put on the same coordinates and relate the projects to one another even though they were captured at different times. This allowed the client to create their design model more accurately and preserve the 100-year-old trees. 3D information is invariant to lighting and shadow. As a result, significantly more data was acquired by laser scanning the tree, and much more accurately than hand measuring. Laser scanning services are the solution for capturing spatial data in a fast, efficient and highly accurate way.

Header: A GPRS Case Study: 3D Laser Scanning a Grain Elevator in Michigan Location: Near Saginaw, Michigan Task: GPRS provided high-definition laser scanning services at a grain elevator in Michigan to capture the as-is conditions of the site. The client needed an accurate representation of the structural features to perform maintenance upgrades. They wanted specific documentation of the bucket elevator legs, fill conveyor bridges and tower supports. Challenge: This was a complex site that included the grain elevator, silos, bins, tanks, conveyors and bridges. The area laser scanned was near 180,000 square feet with heights over 110 feet. Traditional means of measuring would be difficult, costly, time consuming and potentially hazardous. Solutions: The Project Manager completed laser scanning in two days utilizing the Leica C10 and Leica P40 laser scanners. Varying the position of the scanners on the ground and between silos, the technician was able to capture this complex site from a variety of angles. Additionally, the Project Manager occupied elevated positions and tied those scans to the scans performed at grade. All the scanning could be safely performed from a distance without climbing the structure and without the need for renting lifts or scaffolding. Deliverables: The client received Autodesk Recap files of the scans (.rcs file format), black and white TruViews of the site, a 3D AutoCAD Model of the site, and section and plan views of the model laid onto the point cloud data with callouts. Added Value: GPRS’ CAD technicians communicated directly with the client to focus on key areas for detailed modeling to model exactly what was needed to keep costs down by avoiding unnecessary modeling effort. Using advanced extraction techniques and specialized software, GPRS was able to accurately represent structural features and deliver these to the client.
