Laser Scanning Manufacturing Facility for Capital Improvement Project

A Revit model will expedite design changes and fabrication of equipment to increase production capacity at the manufacturing plant.
3D laser scan a manufacturing facility that is receiving upgrades to three of its lines to capture point cloud data and generate a 3D Revit Model.

A specialty compound manufacturer was upgrading three manufacturing lines at its plant as part of a larger capital improvement plan. The facility was originally built in the 1980's and has expanded several times over the years.Multiple levels in the facility needed scanned at a very high level of detail, capturing structural, architectural, MEP and civil elements, along with a site plan. The following areas required 3D laser scanning services:On the ground production level, GPRS captured extruder areas for lines 1-3 and process equipment. On the mezzanine level, GPRS captured mixers for each extrusion line.On the second floor, GPRS captured blender areas for lines 1-3, process equipment, air handling equipment, and additional rooms.Outside, GPRS captured the tank farm and silo farm. GPRS provides 3D laser scanning services for facility upgrades and expansions, delivering 2-4mm accurate dimensions of building infrastructure: structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing features; furnaces, equipment, conduit and piping. With an accurate, comprehensive data set, plant engineers can install new equipment and upgrade the three manufacturing lines. The facility was 3D laser scanned on the weekend to minimize interruption to the manufacturing lines.73 scans were performed in one day with the Leica P40 ScanStation and the Leica RTC360 laser scanner, acquiring very high detail of the plant.Colorized point cloud, TruView Viewer files, and a Revit model were delivered to the client. 3D laser scanning and a Revit model will expedite design changes and fabrication of equipment to increase production capacity. The investment of laser scanning will reduce the project timeline, minimize downtime and change orders -- providing cost savings for the client. This client is pioneering innovation in its industry -- upgrading the lines with updated extruders will increase capacity for long-term growth while minimizing stoppages, set-up times, and scrap material.

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport – DFW Airport, Texas Prefabrication of Canopies for Parking Lot Structures ‍ TASK: GPRS provided 3D laser scanning services for six parking lot structures at the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, ranging from 500 to 2,500 square feet in plan area. The client wanted accurate dimensional information to prefabricate replacement canopies for each of the structures. ‍ CHALLENGE: The client needed accurate information to design replacement fabric panels, including the location of the attachment plates and fasteners. They requested a quick turnaround on this project, GPRS expedited deliverables within 15 working days of the purchase order. ‍ SOLUTION: Dimensions were quickly verified in these high traffic areas of the airport with a Leica laser scanner. GPRS’ Mapping & Modeling Team created an LOD 200 Revit 3D model including basic structural elements, such as exposed structural columns and joists, grade and canopy. With the 3D model, the following details could be used to expedite prefabrication and installation - elevations, plan dimensions, radii of rolled elements, plus locations and dimensions of all attachment hardware.

Accurate PT Cable Layout Critical to Construction

GPRS’ detailed 2D CAD drawings and 3D BIM model allow for safe cutting, coring & drilling for building-wide MEP and HVAC installations.
GPRS located and marked the full post-tension cable system layout for 12 floors of a 49-floor building, with approximately 12,500 sq. ft. of concrete on each floor. After concrete scanning was completed with ground penetrating radar technology, GPRS 3D laser scanned each floor to produce 2D CAD drawings and a 3D BIM model for virtual design and construction. The architect received a permanent record of the post-tension cable layout to complete fit and finish design plans for the building.
Mapping the PT cable layout in concrete slabs facilitates design and minimizes the risk of injuries and delays.
GPRS’ detailed 2D CAD drawings and 3D BIM model allow for safe cutting, coring & drilling for building-wide MEP and HVAC installations. Construction Concrete Scanning, 3D Laser Scanning & 3D BIM Modeling Concrete scanning services will locate critical targets like post tension cables, rebar, conduits, voids, and more to help keep your project on time, on budget, and safe. 3D laser scanning captures concrete markings with 2-4mm accuracy for GPRS to transform into custom 2D CAD drawings and 3D BIM models. Post-tension cable location, spacing, and depth are determined by an engineer, are specific to each project, and must be traced in short distances to reveal the slope. Each tendon pulls 24,000 to 33,000 lbs. of pressure. Damaging a cable when cutting, coring, or drilling into a slab can cause a tendon to burst with enough force to cause severe injury or death, and impact the structural integrity of the slab. Replacing a single post-tension cable costs $10,000 - $20,000. Experienced Project Managers used ground penetrating radar (GPR) technology to locate and mark the precise details of each concrete reinforcement, documenting the location, number of cables, and depth directly on the slab and ceiling. After the post-tension layout was complete, each floor was 3D laser scanned to capture the field markings. That data was used to create a virtual tour, 2D CAD drawings (PT site layout and floor contours,) and a complete 3D BIM model of the site. The captured point cloud data was aligned to survey control, then to the client’s design model, further ensuring the accuracy of the data. GPRS has a verified 99.8% accuracy rate for concrete scanning, backed by our Green Box Guarantee. Laser scanning is accurate within 2-4mm. An accurate layout of post-tension cables protects tendons from damage, prevents injury and mistakes, and protects the integrity of the building. 2D plan sheets and a 2D floor contour map documenting the actual floor elevation added even more accuracy to the depth of cover that is field marked. The 3D BIM model provided the architect data to plan fit and finish designs and coordinate with contractors and MEP trades before build-out.
