Task

Scan and mark the location of rebar, conduits, post tension cables, and other embedded obstructions in a resort casino’s elevated concrete slab.

PROBLEM

  • The Pechanga Resort Casino was conducting renovations in its hotel, event spaces, and ballrooms
  • Crews needed to know where they could safely cut/core through the concrete slab to run new conduits and other utilities
  • The event spaces were being used throughout the renovations, which meant any markings detailing the location of reinforcements and obstructions needed to be easily removable. However, removing them would compromise their usefulness throughout the project lifecycle

Solution

  • GPRS Project Managers used ground penetrating radar (GPR) scanners to locate and mark out the rebar, PT cable, stud rails and conduits embedded within the slab
  • The markings were made on ram board to protect the hotel floor, then documented using a 3D laser scanner
  • The interior spaces were also scanned to capture accurate existing conditions prior to renovations
  • GPRS’ in-house Mapping & Modeling Department used this data to produce a full 3D model of the embedded objects, including their depth within the slab, as well as a 3D model of the interior space and 2D CAD drawings of the markings

Benefits

  • GPRS’ investigation revealed an extraordinary number of conduits within the slab, which could have led to costly and potentially dangerous damages if not properly located prior to cutting & coring activities
  • The data collected allowed the hotel to safely and efficiently plan, design, and execute renovations
  • The event space was able to operate throughout the investigation
