Task
Map the buried utilities and inspect underground sewer lines in and around a historic Las Vegas hotel to mitigate the risk of damaging these utilities during demolition of the property.
PROBLEM
- Client was preparing to demolish a nearly-70-year-old hotel on the Las Vegas Strip
- There were no accurate maps of the building’s buried utilities
- The hotel had undergone numerous renovations over the decades, so it was likely that there was a labyrinth of both active and abandoned lines underground
- Damage to one of these lines could disrupt services to the other businesses on the strip, or endanger those businesses’ patrons
- The hotel was in operation up until its demolition, so all prep work had to be done efficiently and without disrupting guests
Solution
- GPRS’ SIM and NASSCO-certified Project Managers utilized ground penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic (EM) locating, and remote-controlled sewer inspection rovers equipped with CCTV cameras and traceable probes to locate and map the utilities in and around the hotel
- Utility markings were made with non-permanent material, including tape, chalk, and flags, so they could be removed once documented and not remain as an eyesore for patrons
- The field-verified data collected by the Project Managers was uploaded into SiteMap® to ensure seamless communication between members of the project team
Benefits
- GPRS’ industry-leading accuracy rate when conducting utility locates means the demolition contractor could rely on the data we provided to safely plan and complete their work
- Our Project Managers completed their work quickly and efficiently, without disrupting the guest experience
- The hotel was demolished safely, and without disrupting utility services to nearby businesses
