PROBLEM Our client was planning for a complete mechanical rehabilitation of the facility and requested 3D laser scanning services and Building Information Modeling (BIM) from GPRS to expedite the design and execution of this project. Solution We have captured as built site conditions for water treatment plants and wastewater treatment plants from 40 MGD to 1 BGD, documenting the interior and exterior of buildings; foundations; structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing features; equipment, motors, conduit and piping down to ½ inch diameter. GPRS' experienced laser scan team 3D captured all exposed columns, floors, walls, ceilings, stairways, platforms, and MEP equipment and piping ½" in diameter and above, including pumps and valves. GPRS provided a tie-in to topographic survey and processed the data on survey control established for this project. The Mapping & Modeling team broke the model into individual discipline models containing existing MEP features with material type assignments. ‍ Benefits Custom-built advanced Revit families were created for all the varying features so that each layer could be selected or de-selected depending on which portion of the model was being analyzed by the client.

GPRS was tasked with 3D laser scanning the existing conditions of this $417 million Wastewater Treatment Plant and producing an LOD 350 Revit model to plan for future expansion.
59 acres and 27 buildings were 3D laser scanned to provide complete as-built documentation of a Colorado Wastewater Treatment Plant. This client is the largest water reclamation provider in the Rocky Mountain West, serving 1.8 million people in a 715 square-mile area. Task 59 acres and 27 buildings were 3D laser scanned to provide complete as-built documentation of a Colorado Wastewater Treatment Plant. PROBLEM The client needed the fastest way to document 59 acres and 27 buildings with the highest level of quality. Each building was unique and needed to be documented and modeled to plan for expansion, including pumping stations, sludge digester, thickener, tank reclamation, purification systems, aeration, primary and secondary settling, maintenance facilities and visitor center. The client had their own laser scanner, but did not have the manpower and resources to complete the project timely. Solution GPRS has a highly integrated and highly motivated team of laser scanning professionals. 59 acres of campus was 3D laser scanned in a 4-month period, sometimes with up to 10 Project Managers on site at one time. GPRS Project Managers captured 2,990 color scans and an in-house team of engineers produced an LOD 350 Revit model of the interior and exterior of 27 buildings of a 59 Acre Wastewater Treatment Plant including architectural and structural details, MEP and process piping ½" and above, valves, flanges, equipment detail and location, stairwells, railings, closets, restrooms and janitor rooms. The client also requested EdgeWise files, so the GPRS Mapping & Modeling Team modeled all piping, valves, flanges, ducts, conduit and framing and organized it in layers in accordance with the client’s naming conventions for location, plant process and material specifications. The client also used the BIM model to determine if the existing drawings reflected actual site conditions. Benefits 3D laser scanning enables clients to add, modify, validate and document their design digitally. 3D laser scanning allowed the plant to have a full scope of the existing conditions before renovations were made to the facility.

LiDAR Survey Dimensions of a 6-Story Building

GPRS’ accurate measurements allowed the client to order dimensionally-correct windows for each specific opening, thus reducing any change orders for this project. The client can review the 6-story building and its openings in 3 separate deliverables: the point cloud, the 2D drawings, and the TruViews.

Location: Detroit, Michigan Task: To capture the dimensions of all the window openings on the building. Challenge: The building was a 6-story building with windows on all four sides. The height alone of a 6-story building can create enough challenges when obtaining accurate measurements of window dimensions. This project, however, presented additional challenges. For example, the exterior of the building was not easily accessible by lift or scaffolding due to its being located along a busy road with minimal right of way. Additionally, the other sides of the building also had obstacles which further limited access to the windows. Solutions: By utilizing laser scanning, a non-contact measurement tool, GPRS was able to capture the accurate dimensions of the window openings safely from the ground, as well as from other safe locations. Windowsills can sometimes be difficult to capture when scanning from the ground, but our scan technicians were able to set up on and scan from surrounding buildings and rooftops to ensure enough elevation to capture these features accurately for our client. And since laser scanning is not only safe and accurate, but also is extremely fast, the field work was limited to one day. Deliverable: GPRS provided our client with 2D elevations in AutoCAD, which included the dimensions of the edge of existing rough openings dictated by the limestone cladding. Additionally, we supplied our client with TruViews – 3D photographs overlaid on top of the point cloud, allowing for rudimentary measurements directly from the photos. The client can now view the building and its openings in 3 separate deliverables: the point cloud, the 2D drawings, and the TruViews. Added Value: Many times, in field measuring, there is an assumption made, after measuring several similar units, that others will likely be of the same dimensions. With laser scanning we can easily and accurately determine the dimensions of each opening individually. As is common with many older buildings, many of the openings of this building appeared to be the same size but, in fact, varied enough to cause potential problems. GPRS’ accurate measurements allowed the client to order dimensionally-correct windows for each specific opening, thus reducing any change orders for windows that did not fit perfectly the first time they were placed.
