Construction Laser Scan of Office Building

ClearEdge3D Edgewise software was used to process piping and quickly create a 3D MEP BIM model for the client.
GPRS 3D laser scanned 40,000 square feet of office space on the 6th floor of a building in Cincinnati, Ohio. The area was recently renovated, and the objective was to capture MEP features to create an accurate as-built survey for the client. GPRS’ Project Manager used a Leica P40 ScanStation to capture 3D point cloud data for the GPRS’ Mapping and Modeling team to create a 3D BIM model.

Location: Cincinnati, OH Task: GPRS 3D laser scanned 40,000 square feet of office space on the 6th floor of a building in Cincinnati. The area was recently renovated, and the objective was to capture MEP features to create an accurate as-built survey for the client. GPRS’ Project Manager used a Leica P40 ScanStation to capture 3D point cloud data and GPRS’ in-house engineers created a 3D CAD model. Challenge: The client wanted to complete the laser scan after the space had been framed in, but before the ceiling grid and tiles were installed. This gave the client a very limited window of time to capture the above ceiling piping. They wanted to quickly and accurately capture all MEP components and pipes, so they could install the ceiling and begin to populate the space. Solutions: GPRS maintained constant communication with the client to schedule the scanning just before ceiling grid was installed. With just a few days’ notice, the Project Manager mobilized to the site. GPRS’ experienced technician could ensure that 3D laser scan technology would completely and accurately capture the as-built site conditions. Laser scanning was completed while other contractors continued their work, and complex areas were scheduled during the hours when contractors were off-site. Deliverables: GPRS provided the client with Autodesk Recap files and Black and White Leica TruViews. Also, using preliminary EdgeWise extraction, GPRS engineers provided an AutoCAD .dwg file to the client. Added Value: The scan technician worked during off-peak times, which expedited GPRS’ time on site. Additionally, GPRS’ engineers are trained and experienced in numerous software applications and can create custom deliverables for each client quickly. In this case, ClearEdge 3D Edgewise software was used to process piping and quickly create a 3D model.

Brick Manufacturer Uses 3D Laser Scanning For Facility Upgrades

This client requested as-built data, 2D CAD drawings, and a 3D BIM model of their 150,000 square feet facility in 12 business days. The 3D model will allow this manufacturer to discover any discrepancies between the design model and existing conditions so they can make necessary adjustments before the facility upgrade begins.
The demand for wood molded brick continues to grow as architects and designers utilize more brick in building designs. To keep up with this demand, our client, the largest molded brick manufacturer in the United States, is planning upgrades to its Shoemakersville, Pennsylvania facility. These upgrades include adding a second kiln to increase capacity and modernizing equipment to improve product quality. The client requested point cloud data, 2D CAD drawings, and a 3D Revit model to understand the existing conditions of the facility.

These upgrades include adding a second kiln to increase capacity and modernizing equipment to improve product quality. The client requested point cloud data, 2D CAD drawings, and a 3D Revit model to understand the existing conditions of the facility. Challenge: Our client was on a tight timeline. They requested as-built data, 2D drawings and a 3D BIM model of their 150,000 square feet facility in 12 business days. To complete the facility upgrades, they needed line, equipment, and tie-in points. Solution: 150,000 sq. ft. of space was 3D laser scanned in two days on-site with the Leica P50 ScanStation and the RTC360 laser scanner. 279 laser scans were taken to capture complete as-built data of the site’s structure, equipment, and MEP. Deliverable: GPRS delivered an LOD 200 design-intent architectural, structural, and MEP Revit Model, 2D AutoCAD floor plans and interior elevations, and an RCS point cloud file. MEP piping and conduit 2 inch and larger, HVAC ductwork, pumps, motors and equipment were 3D modeled to within ¼ inch accuracy. The 3D model will allow our client to discover any discrepancies between the design and existing conditions so they can make necessary adjustments before the facility upgrade begins. Added Value: Coordinating the work of designers with structural, MEP, and other construction teams is often difficult. Laser scanning provides a fast and accurate way to collect large amounts of site measurement data which can be used to expedite the retrofit design process. 3D scanning will help this client design to the actual as-built conditions, reducing clashes and change orders. Inaccurate data would slow teams down, increase the risk of miscommunication, and create prefabrication and installation problems that could lead to rework.

GPRS 3D Laser Scans The Kennedy Space Center

The Kennedy Space Center used GPRS 3D laser scanning services during recent upgrades to Launch Complex 39B. Our client was installing piping from the mechanical room under the launch pad up to the surface where they terminate, rerouting overhead piping through the mechanical room, as well as, removing and installing new equipment. GPRS delivered accurate and reliable as-built data for the Kennedy Space Center to plan upgrades and reroute piping.

Our client was installing piping from the mechanical room under the launch pad up to the surface where they terminate, rerouting overhead piping through the mechanical room, as well as, removing and installing new equipment. GPRS delivered accurate and reliable as built data for the Kennedy Space Center to plan upgrades and reroute piping. ‍ CHALLENGE: The client needed fast and accurate as built documentation of the project areas so they could effectively plan upgrades and piping routes and note any clash points. Understanding exactly where the mechanical room equipment was located below the launch pad surface was crucial to this project and difficult to determine using a method other than 3D laser scanning. ‍ SOLUTION: The GPRS Mapping & Modeling Team delivered an LOD 300 3D BIM model of the structural and MEP details. Accurate information helped the client plan for the equipment and piping and determine the vertical penetration points. This saved time and money by prefabricating the piping offsite and minimizing rework from misaligned pipes and equipment.
