This client is the largest water reclamation provider in the Rocky Mountain West, serving 1.8 million people in a 715 square-mile area. Task 59 acres and 27 buildings were 3D laser scanned to provide complete as-built documentation of a Colorado Wastewater Treatment Plant. PROBLEM The client needed the fastest way to document 59 acres and 27 buildings with the highest level of quality. Each building was unique and needed to be documented and modeled to plan for expansion, including pumping stations, sludge digester, thickener, tank reclamation, purification systems, aeration, primary and secondary settling, maintenance facilities and visitor center. The client had their own laser scanner, but did not have the manpower and resources to complete the project timely. Solution GPRS has a highly integrated and highly motivated team of laser scanning professionals. 59 acres of campus was 3D laser scanned in a 4-month period, sometimes with up to 10 Project Managers on site at one time. GPRS Project Managers captured 2,990 color scans and an in-house team of engineers produced an LOD 350 Revit model of the interior and exterior of 27 buildings of a 59 Acre Wastewater Treatment Plant including architectural and structural details, MEP and process piping ½" and above, valves, flanges, equipment detail and location, stairwells, railings, closets, restrooms and janitor rooms. The client also requested EdgeWise files, so the GPRS Mapping & Modeling Team modeled all piping, valves, flanges, ducts, conduit and framing and organized it in layers in accordance with the client’s naming conventions for location, plant process and material specifications. The client also used the BIM model to determine if the existing drawings reflected actual site conditions. Benefits 3D laser scanning enables clients to add, modify, validate and document their design digitally. 3D laser scanning allowed the plant to have a full scope of the existing conditions before renovations were made to the facility.

Our client required a high-detail 3D BIM model to accurately visualize, design, modify, and manage the update of a heat exchanger within a Wastewater Treatment facility, enabling efficient updates and modifications without the need for extensive on-site measurements or manual drafting.

The Leica RTC360 scans in color, which is useful when you need a true representation of a site in color detail. Deliverables LOD 300 3D BIM Model Task GPRS was called to 3D laser scan the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant and render an LOD 300 BIM model of the three-level heat exchanger for ABC Piping Co. to update one of the systems. PROBLEM Our client desired to upgrade the heat exchanger to reduce maintenance, energy consumption, and overall operational expenses in the long term. To properly design, prefabricate, and install system updates, ABC Piping Co. required a detailed 3D BIM model of the current mechanical and piping system, including pipe sizes, materials, and routing. Solution GPRS partnered with ABC Piping Co. to 3D laser scan and model the heat exchanger at the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant for upgrades. GPRS utilized the Leica RTC360 laser scanner to capture as-built conditions from 3 different floors around the existing heat exchangers. 108 laser scans were taken with the RTC360 from different locations to capture the intricate details of this very dense mechanical facility. The 3D BIM model provideed a detailed and accurate representation of the existing heat exchangers within the facility, enabling engineers and designers to clearly understand the spatial relationships, constraints, and interdependencies between various components. Benefits 3D laser scanning captured precise layout, dimensions, and locations of the existing architectural, structural, MEP, FP, and HVAC system elements for this facility in a point cloud. The GPRS Mapping & Modeling team transformed point cloud data into an intelligent 3D BIM model to aid system engineering. A 3D BIM model saved in a shared environment allowed all disciplines to work together to identify and resolve clashes before the system integration begins, ensuring a smooth retrofit with minimal rework. ‍

Precise As-Built Conditions of Church and School

A Denver Catholic church and school constructed in the 1950’s requested 3D laser scanning of their 56,000 sq ft three-building campus to plan for renovations. Our client was an architecture, planning and interior design firm specializing in commercial, institutional and academic design.

Location: Denver, Colorado Task: A Denver Catholic church and school constructed in the 1950’s requested 3D laser scanning of their 56,000 sq ft three-building campus to plan for renovations. Our client was an architecture, planning and interior design firm specializing in commercial, institutional and academic design. Problem: Construction documents existed from the original build, but the client was unsure if they were up to date. Each building required a different scanning scope. The church and parish hall required complete exterior and interior documentation, while the school required only exterior documentation. The church required new design drawings and cost estimates from the firm before proceeding with renovations. Solution: In one day on-site, a GPRS/TruePoint Project Manager completed 359 scans with the Leica P50 ScanStation and the RTC360 laser scanner. The client required point cloud files, 2D CAD drawings, a 3D Revit model, and TruViews to understand the existing conditions of the buildings on campus. 2D CAD exterior elevations and floor plans of the church; and exterior elevations of the school were created for this project. An LOD 200 Revit 2021 3D model of the church was delivered with architectural/structural details, including columns, beams, walls, floors, ceilings, doors, windows, stairs, roof, pews, lectern, and alter. An LOD 200 Revit model was delivered of the school exterior. Benefits: Renovations are not new to this campus; they recently added an outdoor learning lab and eucharistic adoration chapel. They understand the value of accurate as-built data. The firm wanted to keep the historic craftsmanship of the church but provide modern updates. A quality point cloud created a reliable as-built BIM model of existing conditions with ¼ inch accuracy tolerance.
