3D Laser Scanning a Historic Church for Restoration

To complete the restoration of the church, the client required accurate 2D CAD drawings with precise measurements of the structural and architectural elements.
Our client needed accurate as built documentation to complete a $1.2 million restoration and improvement project for a historic church. The 1875-built church in Glandorf, Ohio was the largest Roman Catholic church built at the time. Built in Neo-Gothic style, it contained a 225-foot spire, beautiful statues imported from Austria and stained-glass windows imported from Germany. In 2017, the church underwent a 3-month historic restoration and improvement project. The project involved preventive measures including fiber-glassing the interior walls, painting and installing updated storm windows to protect the stained glass. In addition, damaged sections of the archway and niches were repaired, and a ceiling was lowered in the vestibule to highlight a stained-glass window.
GPRS’ client needed accurate as-built documentation to complete a $1.2 million restoration and improvement project for a historic church.
Our client provides historic restoration services and is dedicated to providing excellence in conservation and restoration. To complete the restoration of the church, the client required accurate CAD drawings with precise measurements of the structural and architectural elements. With a Leica P40 laser scanner, GPRS quickly captured the structural and architectural details of the church’s interior with92 laser scans. 3D laser scanning captured full spatial and color data with high detail and precision. Laser scanning can capture extreme detail for even the most intricate buildings easily. 3D laser scanning delivered a valuable data set to the client. Intensity map point cloud files provided digital visualization. 2D CAD drawings were created from accurate scan data. From skyscrapers to sewer lines, GPRS Intelligently Visualizes The Built World® to keep your projects on time, on budget, and safe.

3D Laser Scanning Services Used for Manufacturing Facility Expansion

The client was making a large investment in capital and equipment and needed reliable as-built data and a 3D BIM model to expedite the installation without rework.
A pet nutrition manufacturer was expanding its facility to increase the production of current products and add an additional packaging line. The 30-year-old company planned to invest $17.5 million in this expansion. GPRS conducted an as-built site survey and created a 3D BIM model for the facility expansion. We captured approximately 50,000 square feet of the dry mixing facility spanning 5 levels, including a meat slurry room, a batching area, an extruder room, a hammermill room, and several mechanical and electrical rooms. Precise point cloud data was captured for all architectural and structural features, equipment, conduit, and piping.

3D Laser Scanning Services Used for Manufacturing Facility Expansion Project Manager Insight: Our client planned this manufacturing facility expansion in two phases. The first phase will expand production from five to seven days a week. The second phase will add an additional packaging line. -- Karl Hofmeister, TruePoint Project Manager Location: Richmond, Indiana Task: A pet nutrition manufacturer was expanding its facility to increase the production of current products and add an additional packaging line. The 30-year-old company planned to invest $17.5 million in this expansion. TruePoint Laser Scanning conducted an as-built site survey and created a 3D BIM model for the facility expansion. TruePoint captured approximately 50,000 square feet of the dry mixing facility spanning 5 levels, including a meat slurry room, a batching area, an extruder room, a hammermill room and several mechanical and electrical rooms. TruePoint captured precise point cloud data of all architectural and structural features, equipment, conduit and piping. Challenge: No as built plans existed for the facility. The plant was complex, capturing the existing spatial data of the machinery, conduit and piping in a high level of detail was important to the plant engineers. There were many silos and machinery that needed to be worked around and could obstruct the view. The client was making a large investment in capital and equipment and needed reliable data to expedite the installation without rework. Solution: In two days on site, TruePoint’s experienced project managers 3D laser scanned the manufacturing facility with the Leica P50, Leica P40 and RTC 360 laser scanners. TruePoint’s in-house modeling team built an information-rich 3D BIM model for the client. Deliverable: The deliverables created for this project included an intensity map Autodesk Recap point cloud (.rcs file), LGS/JetStream Viewer files and a Revit 2019 LOD 300 3D model. The information-rich 3D model included: Basic structural elements including exposed columns, beams and structural bracing. Basic architectural elements including walls, doors, windows, floors and ceilings. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing piping 2" in diameter and above, showing valves on all pipes that were 2" and larger. Conduit runs were modeled as solid blocks. MEP Equipment including pumps, electrical boxes, silos and HVAC ductwork. Added Value: TruePoint 3D laser scanned another facility for this client earlier this year. We were contacted to provide accurate site data to plan for this facility expansion. By using laser scanning instead of traditional survey methods, TruePoint saved this client thousands of dollars in field survey work and drafting time, and provided greater detail than what would have otherwise been possible. With an accurate, comprehensive data set, plant engineers could install the new equipment and packaging line. TruePoint Laser Scanning is a leading provider of 3D laser scanning services in Indiana, delivering precise point cloud data, 2D drawings and 3D BIM models, using state-of-the-art equipment, software and processes. The Kennedy Space Center – Cape Canaveral, Florida 3D BIM Model to Upgrade Launch Complex 39B ‍ TASK: The Kennedy Space Center used GPRS 3D laser scanning services during recent upgrades to Launch Complex 39B. Our client was installing piping from the mechanical room under the launch pad up to the surface where they terminate, rerouting overhead piping through the mechanical room, as well as, removing and installing new equipment. GPRS delivered accurate and reliable as built data for the Kennedy Space Center to plan upgrades and reroute piping. ‍ CHALLENGE: The client needed fast and accurate as built documentation of the project areas so they could effectively plan upgrades and piping routes and note any clash points. Understanding exactly where the mechanical room equipment was located below the launch pad surface was crucial to this project and difficult to determine using a method other than 3D laser scanning. ‍ SOLUTION: The GPRS Mapping & Modeling Team delivered an LOD 300 3D BIM model of the structural and MEP details. Accurate information helped the client plan for the equipment and piping and determine the vertical penetration points. This saved time and money by prefabricating the piping offsite and minimizing rework from misaligned pipes and equipment.
