3D BIM Model for Virtual Design and Clash Detection

Providing both a 3D BIM model and a 2D reflected ceiling plan allowed various trades and MEP professionals to work without disturbing each other's timelines, to finish the project with fewer mistakes, reworks, and less cost.
Use 3D laser scanning to create a BIM model for new construction coordination in Paoli, Pennsylvania.
GPRS provided a detailed Revit 3D BIM model and reflected ceiling plan to keep a large project on schedule and reduce clashes and reworks.
Only the building shell existed, but did include the foundation, structural skeleton, columns, beams, and fire suppression system pipingA BIM model was requested to complete the design, minimize clashes, and plan for field coordinationThe VDC engineer wanted each trade to be able to conduct their specific work without interference from other trades A 3D Revit model was created from the point cloud with standard detail that included architectural, structural, and MEP featuresA reflected ceiling plan, an architectural drawing that shows visible objects located on the ceiling of a space, was delivered for MEP coordination2D plans and 3D models allowed this client to complete the design, communicate the scope of work to each trade, and efficiently schedule work to be completed Model-based implementations are the foundation of our client’s VDC department. They plan site layout and work sequencing for efficient logistics and safety.Because the VDC engineer received an accurate as-built model to place all building components and MEP into, they were able to effectively plan and communicate to minimize trade interference, clashes, installation problems, rework, and additional costs

LiDAR Survey Dimensions of a 6-Story Building

GPRS’ accurate measurements allowed the client to order dimensionally-correct windows for each specific opening, thus reducing any change orders for this project. The client can review the 6-story building and its openings in 3 separate deliverables: the point cloud, the 2D drawings, and the TruViews.
To capture the dimensions of all the window openings on the building.
GPRS captured the accurate dimensions of the window openings safely from the ground.
Location: Detroit, Michigan Task: To capture the dimensions of all the window openings on the building. Challenge: The building was a 6-story building with windows on all four sides. The height alone of a 6-story building can create enough challenges when obtaining accurate measurements of window dimensions. This project, however, presented additional challenges. For example, the exterior of the building was not easily accessible by lift or scaffolding due to its being located along a busy road with minimal right of way. Additionally, the other sides of the building also had obstacles which further limited access to the windows. Solutions: By utilizing laser scanning, a non-contact measurement tool, GPRS was able to capture the accurate dimensions of the window openings safely from the ground, as well as from other safe locations. Windowsills can sometimes be difficult to capture when scanning from the ground, but our scan technicians were able to set up on and scan from surrounding buildings and rooftops to ensure enough elevation to capture these features accurately for our client. And since laser scanning is not only safe and accurate, but also is extremely fast, the field work was limited to one day. Deliverable: GPRS provided our client with 2D elevations in AutoCAD, which included the dimensions of the edge of existing rough openings dictated by the limestone cladding. Additionally, we supplied our client with TruViews – 3D photographs overlaid on top of the point cloud, allowing for rudimentary measurements directly from the photos. The client can now view the building and its openings in 3 separate deliverables: the point cloud, the 2D drawings, and the TruViews. Added Value: Many times, in field measuring, there is an assumption made, after measuring several similar units, that others will likely be of the same dimensions. With laser scanning we can easily and accurately determine the dimensions of each opening individually. As is common with many older buildings, many of the openings of this building appeared to be the same size but, in fact, varied enough to cause potential problems. GPRS’ accurate measurements allowed the client to order dimensionally-correct windows for each specific opening, thus reducing any change orders for windows that did not fit perfectly the first time they were placed.

GPRS Provides Point Cloud and 3D Mesh of Trees

GPRS 3D laser scanned three 100-year old trees and provided the client with intensity map point cloud files and a 3D mesh of the trees to include them in the design plan.
The client desired to laser scan three 100-year old trees and include them in the design plans for a new housing development. GPRS 3D laser scanned the trees and provided the client with intensity map point cloud files and a 3D mesh of the trees. This was GPRS’ second phase of laser scanning for this client.

Caption: GPRS provided the client with the intensity map point cloud files and 3D mesh of the trees. Location: Austin, Texas Task: The client desired to laser scan three 100-year old trees and include them in the design plans for a new development. GPRS 3D laser scanned the trees and provided the client with intensity map point cloud files and a 3D mesh of the trees for reality capture. This was GPRS’ second phase of laser scanning for this client. Challenge: The client could not accurately capture the location, exact dimensions and detail of the three trees. They needed laser scanning services to include the trees in the design plan. It was important to capture the existing conditions without damaging the tree trunks or limbs. Solutions: GPRS’ Texas office used a Leica C10 ScanStation to capture the three trees and the surrounding area. Accurate 3D measurements were captured in a few hours on site in a fast and environmentally friendly manner. Laser scanners are non-contact, they scan from tripods on the ground up to 300 yards, keeping the environment untouched. Deliverables: GPRS provided the client with intensity map point cloud files and 3D mesh of the trees. This can be pulled into an existing Revit or AutoCAD model and aligned with the design plan, as well as be used in reality capture software. Added Value: GPRS incorporated the first and second mobilization into the same coordinate system which allowed the separate projects to be put on the same coordinates and relate the projects to one another even though they were captured at different times. This allowed the client to create their design model more accurately and preserve the 100-year-old trees. 3D information is invariant to lighting and shadow. As a result, significantly more data was acquired by laser scanning the tree, and much more accurately than hand measuring. Laser scanning services are the solution for capturing spatial data in a fast, efficient and highly accurate way.
