GPRS Company’s 3D Laser Scanning Aids Award-Winning Airport Expansion

Existing Conditions, a GPRS Company, provided 3D laser scanning and modeling services to support the completion of an award-winning expansion to Boston Logan International Airport.
Existing Conditions, a GPRS Company, provided 3D laser scanning and modeling services to support the completion of an award-winning expansion to Boston Logan International Airport.
• AECOM, Suffolk Construction, and Luis Vidal + Architects needed accurate existing conditions documentation of multiple existing spaces inside the airport • The contractor also needed precise as-built documentation of the new construction prior to sheetrock installation, to comply with Massport (Massachusetts Port Authority) regulations • Many of the spaces that needed to be scanned were congested with MEP runs and other infrastructure • All work had to be completed while the airport was in operation SOLUTION • Existing Conditions utilized multiple 3D laser scanners, including the small and nimble Leica BLK360 laser scanner, to capture the required data • The contractor was so impressed with our work on the initial project that they asked us back to scan additional spaces • 3D Revit models were created using the scan data to allow for remote planning BENEFITS • The accurate and comprehensive as-built data provided Boston Logan with a detailed record of the building’s current state before renovations were completed, and of the new construction • Highly detailed, accurate digital measurements assisted with the safe and successful expansion of the structure • The client and their subcontractors could reference this data as they completed their work, and it will be preserved for future O&M purposes

Caption: GPRS completed long-range, high-resolution laser scanning of a historic building in Philadelphia. Quote from GPRS Team Member: “The scanning and modeling teams worked around the clock, sometimes 7 days a week, to complete this project. The hard work paid off and we’re thrilled with the result – one of our most highly-detailed architectural 3D models to date.” - Nate Baker, GPRS Service Line Leader – 3D Laser Scanning Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Task: GPRS Laser Scanning developed an as-built model to aid this client in converting a historic building into a luxury hotel. GPRS provided 3D scanning services for a 250,000 square-foot building, including the exterior facades, floors 1-4, basement, roof, penthouses and mechanical spaces. GPRS’ team of in-house architects, engineers and CAD Technicians delivered point cloud files, a 3D model, and TruViews to the client. Challenge: The client was challenged with acquiring highly detailed architectural data including walls, ceilings, floors, stairs, balustrades, colonnades etc., and structural data including exposed columns and beams to design the renovation. Due to the size of the building and the ornate features, traditional methods would have taken months to complete and would not have been as accurate or anywhere near as detailed. Solutions: The GPRS scan technician completed 1,680 laser scans in 15 days (an average of over 100 scans per day!) with a Leica P20 ScanStation. A 3D Revit model with varying degrees of LOD 200 and LOD 300 modeling was generated by GPRS’ engineers based on the client’s instruction. Some areas of the building, such as the main lobby and exterior facades, required finer modeling detail over 350. This was deciphered through several project scope conferences between GPRS and the client. Deliverables: GPRS delivered point cloud files (.rcs file formats), a 3D Revit model and TruViews to the client. GPRS worked closely with the project architect to review the model in real time utilizing BIM360 software for shared viewing of the model in its current state throughout the 2-month project. Added Value: 3D laser scanning aids the process of architectural design from the early stages of site documentation and conceptualization, to monitoring construction progress and verifying as-built accuracy. Aside from the benefits of quickly and accurately creating detailed as-built drawings of a site, the data acquired through laser scanning has continued value throughout the project's life. Laser scanning and modeling is exploding in the AEC industry. 3D laser scanning creates a smooth BIM workflow, from the acquisition of data to a polished 3D model. Scan to BIM services are becoming more popular as the need for intelligent 3D CAD models grows.

Oil Tank 3D Laser Scan

For oil tank replacement, the true shape and condition of the tank can be critical for ensuring that the new design fits the existing conditions; reducing costly delays or rework.
GPRS provided terrestrial-based 3D laser scanning services for a 25' x 25' x 30' oil tank near Topeka, Kansas. The objective was to capture the existing conditions of the tank, piping, flanges, nozzles, structural steel, pipe supports, and grade.
3D laser scanning by GPRS for an oil tank replacement.
3D laser scanning by GPRS for an oil tank replacement. Case Study: Oil Tank 3D Laser Scan Location: Emporia, Kansas TASK: GPRS provided terrestrial-based 3D laser scanning services for a 25' x 25' x 30' oil tank near Topeka, Kansas. The objective was to capture the existing conditions of the tank, piping, flanges, nozzles, structural steel, pipe supports and grade. PROBLEM: The client was upgrading the oil tank and needed 3D laser scanning to plan for the removal and replacement. For tank replacement, the true shape and condition of the tank can be critical for ensuring that the new design fits the existing conditions; hence reducing costly delays or rework. All piping, nozzles and structural steel around the tank was reality-captured so the new tank could be designed with proper fit and without interruptions to the unit. SOLUTION: 3D laser scanning provides a way to quickly and accurately obtain the existing condition information. The exact dimensions of a tank can easily be determined to ensure that fabrications match the existing structure. In less than 5 hours on site, the GPRS Project Manager captured the as built conditions of the existing tank and nozzles. Once the point cloud was registered, GPRS Mapping & Modeling CAD technicians delivered the point cloud data for the client to incorporate into their design model. GPRS delivered Intensity Map Point Cloud files, RCS Files and PTG Files to the client. BENEFITS: GPRS uses Leica Laser scanners, which can also capture images to further enhance the collected data. These images, called TruViews, were provided to the client and offer factual record of the areas inspected. GPRS is an experienced 3D laser scanning company. Our knowledgeable Project Managers confidently scan complex jobs with extreme safety requirements. For this job, the technician used an intrinsically safe laser scanner, since any spark would cause an explosion for this particular tank farm. Delivering the point cloud data gives the client the ability to do clash detection for interferences, saving them time and money in the field.
