The area was recently renovated, and the objective was to capture MEP features to create an accurate as-built survey for the client. Challenge: The client wanted to complete the laser scan after the space had been framed in, but before the ceiling grid and tiles were installed. This gave the client a very limited window of time to capture the above ceiling piping. They wanted to quickly and accurately capture all MEP components and pipes, so they could install the ceiling and begin to populate the space. Solutions: GPRS maintained constant communication with the client to schedule the scanning just before ceiling grid was installed. With just a few days’ notice, the Project Manager mobilized to the site. GPRS’ experienced technician could ensure that 3D laser scan technology would completely and accurately capture the as-built site conditions. Laser scanning was completed while other contractors continued their work, and complex areas were scheduled during the hours when contractors were off-site. Deliverables: GPRS provided the client with Autodesk Recap files and Black and White Leica TruViews. Also, using preliminary EdgeWise extraction, GPRS engineers provided an AutoCAD .dwg file to the client. Added Value: The scan technician worked during off-peak times, which expedited GPRS’ time on site. Additionally, GPRS’ engineers are trained and experienced in numerous software applications and can create custom deliverables for each client quickly. In this case, ClearEdge 3D Edgewise software was used to process piping and quickly create a 3D model.

3D Laser Scanning a Historic Church for Restoration

To complete the restoration of the church, the client required accurate 2D CAD drawings with precise measurements of the structural and architectural elements.
Our client needed accurate as built documentation to complete a $1.2 million restoration and improvement project for a historic church. The 1875-built church in Glandorf, Ohio was the largest Roman Catholic church built at the time. Built in Neo-Gothic style, it contained a 225-foot spire, beautiful statues imported from Austria and stained-glass windows imported from Germany. In 2017, the church underwent a 3-month historic restoration and improvement project. The project involved preventive measures including fiber-glassing the interior walls, painting and installing updated storm windows to protect the stained glass. In addition, damaged sections of the archway and niches were repaired, and a ceiling was lowered in the vestibule to highlight a stained-glass window.

3D Laser Scanning Michigan Power Plant

GPRS provided 3D laser scanning and modeling services for a power plant in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which generates and processes four main services: steam, electricity, compressed air and domestic hot water. The objective was to as-built survey the 5-level building, basement, exterior facades, rooftop areas, electrical switch gear rooms, vaults and interstitial space below the control room. GPRS generated a 3D model in Bentley Microstation for the client’s use. The model included all civil, structural, electrical and mechanical features, including piping and conduits ½" in diameter and larger

Challenge: The client needed to accurately document existing conditions. Due to the vast space and density of piping, it would have been much more difficult and time consuming to accurately depict the location of pipe runs, structural features and other details in the plant manually. It would have also been difficult and unsafe to capture overhead and structural features without the use of a lift. Solutions: Utilizing several scan technicians and multiple Leica laser scanners, including the Leica P-40, P-20, and C-10 ScanStation, GPRS was able to occupy existing plant benchmarks and orient the data to survey control. GPRS’ scan technicians captured full color panoramic photographs at each scan location with the on-board camera. GPRS completed over 1,200 individual scans for this project due to the density of the piping. Deliverables: GPRS’ team of in-house CAD technicians provided Microstation POD files, full-color TruViews and a Bentley Microstation V8i 3D model. Added Value: GPRS communicated directly with on-site personnel at the power plant and participated in daily work briefings to ensure compliance with plant safety protocol. Additionally, GPRS’ CAD technician visited the site with the scan technician, utilizing cutting edge methods to conduct in-field verification and quality assurance review of the 3D model on tablets in real time using both virtual reality and augmented reality methods.
