Above & Below-Ground Data Capture for California School's HVAC Upgrades

In less than two hours on site, GPRS 3D Laser Scanning captured all aboveground features and utility field markings that were then used to provide integrated above and below-ground plan view of the campus via 2D CAD drawings to plan HVAC upgrades, and have accurate existing condition documentation for future use
A Los Angeles, California high school required 3D laser scanning of the above ground and below ground infrastructure to create 2D CAD drawings and plan for HVAC system upgrades throughout the campus
In less than two hours on site, GPRS 3D Laser Scanning captured all aboveground features and utility field markings that were then used to provide a integrated above and below-ground plan view of the campus via 2D CAD drawings to plan HVAC upgrades, and have accurate existing condition documentation for future use.
Problem • A 12-year-old high school was replacing the piping on 16 HVAC units throughout the campus. • The piping for these units runs intricately in and out of buildings, and through retaining walls and mechanical yards. • The areas that the pipes thread through do not have any as-builts or existing plans. Solution • Using the Leica RTC360 laser scanner, a Project Manager captured elements of the surrounding campus and GPR markings in less than hours on site • This project was laser scanned in full color, allowing the client to easily visualize and identify structural elements, pipes, conduits, and concrete reinforcement points inside the point cloud • CAD engineers created 2D AutoCAD floor plans and exterior elevations, PDFs with and without the point cloud overlayed Benefits • The combination of laser scanning structural and ground penetrating radar markings provided the client a high definition 3D comprehensive view of the campus, including both visible and invisible elements • With 3D laser scan data, the client can verify the HVAC mechanical equipment with confidence knowing high accuracy instruments minimize position error throughout the 3D space • The client has the most up-to date, accurate and comprehensive information to design HVAC upgrades

Quote from GPRS Team Member: “The scanning and modeling teams worked around the clock, sometimes 7 days a week, to complete this project. The hard work paid off and we’re thrilled with the result – one of our most highly-detailed architectural 3D models to date.” - Nate Baker, GPRS Service Line Leader – 3D Laser Scanning Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Task: GPRS Laser Scanning developed an as-built model to aid this client in converting a historic building into a luxury hotel. GPRS provided 3D scanning services for a 250,000 square-foot building, including the exterior facades, floors 1-4, basement, roof, penthouses and mechanical spaces. GPRS’ team of in-house architects, engineers and CAD Technicians delivered point cloud files, a 3D model, and TruViews to the client. Challenge: The client was challenged with acquiring highly detailed architectural data including walls, ceilings, floors, stairs, balustrades, colonnades etc., and structural data including exposed columns and beams to design the renovation. Due to the size of the building and the ornate features, traditional methods would have taken months to complete and would not have been as accurate or anywhere near as detailed. Solutions: The GPRS scan technician completed 1,680 laser scans in 15 days (an average of over 100 scans per day!) with a Leica P20 ScanStation. A 3D Revit model with varying degrees of LOD 200 and LOD 300 modeling was generated by GPRS’ engineers based on the client’s instruction. Some areas of the building, such as the main lobby and exterior facades, required finer modeling detail over 350. This was deciphered through several project scope conferences between GPRS and the client. Deliverables: GPRS delivered point cloud files (.rcs file formats), a 3D Revit model and TruViews to the client. GPRS worked closely with the project architect to review the model in real time utilizing BIM360 software for shared viewing of the model in its current state throughout the 2-month project. Added Value: 3D laser scanning aids the process of architectural design from the early stages of site documentation and conceptualization, to monitoring construction progress and verifying as-built accuracy. Aside from the benefits of quickly and accurately creating detailed as-built drawings of a site, the data acquired through laser scanning has continued value throughout the project's life. Laser scanning and modeling is exploding in the AEC industry. 3D laser scanning creates a smooth BIM workflow, from the acquisition of data to a polished 3D model. Scan to BIM services are becoming more popular as the need for intelligent 3D CAD models grows.

GPRS Utility Locate and 3D Laser Scan for a Gas Station

The data GPRS collects can be used to develop the utility portion of a conceptual site model (CSM) to visualize migration routes, communicate with stakeholders, make informed remediation decisions, and protect the team on site and the environment.
A gas station requested utility locate and as built data to document the existing conditions for site upgrades and to develop an emergency response plan for potential leaks. Accurate 2D utility locate maps, a 3D BIM model, and a conceptual site model (CSM) were created of the gas station, underground storage tank system, and surrounding utilities.
A Michigan gas station requested utility locate and as built data to document the existing conditions for site upgrades and to develop an emergency response plan for potential leaks.
Task: A gas station requested utility locate and as built data to document the existing conditions for site upgrades and to develop an emergency response plan for potential leaks. Accurate 2D utility locate maps, a 3D BIM model, and a conceptual site model (CSM) were created of the gas station, underground storage tank system, and surrounding utilities. Problem: The gas station lacked as built site information required for compliance with environmental regulations, essential to plan for site upgrades, and necessary to take prompt corrective action in the case of an emergency. The client did not have an accurate conceptual site model (CSM) to understand and interpret contaminant fate and transport in the subsurface. Solution: GPRS Project Managers used state-of-the art equipment to perform ground penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic (EM) locating, video pipe inspection (VPI), leak detection, 3D laser scanning, and drone photogrammetry services at the gas station. The GPRS Mapping & Modeling Team delivered accurate as built and utility location data in point cloud, 2D maps, 3D BIM model formats, to help eliminate guesswork from decision making, and prevent time-consuming and dangerous mistakes and the costs associated with them. The gas station received access to millimeter-accurate information to efficiently plan work and drill safely. Locating underground storage tanks, including their depths, can help the station owner detect unusual fluctuations in fuel levels and assess any potential leak faster. Detailed site maps can help to communicate the location of a leak, the most likely paths and extent of horizontal and vertical delineation, and to plan assessment and mitigation efforts. Benefits: Infrastructure location and mapping are vital before conducting any construction or subsurface work like soil boring, or coring concrete to drop vapor pins – to eliminate clashes and utility strikes and keep workers and the community safe. Comprehensive site data is essential for the early detection and management of petroleum leaks at a gas station, to help minimize environmental damage and ensure the safety of employees and the surrounding community. GPRS as built maps and models provide accurate information to avoid hitting a UST or system component, and to avoid a utility strike when sampling soil. The GPRS SiteMap® mobile app securely stores utility data, geolocated and layered, and securely accessible for the station stakeholders to share with those who may need it. The data GPRS collects can also be used to develop the utility portion of a conceptual site model (CSM) to visualize migration routes, communicate with stakeholders, make informed remediation decisions, and protect the team on site and the environment.
