3D Laser Scanning Before Concrete Pour Saved Client Thousands

The deliverables provided will be an asset for years to come as they can be referenced for any future coring or drilling needs showing where everything embedded in the slab was prior to pouring.
The client was in active build of an eight-story apartment complex in Houston, Texas. Each floor had five to six concrete pours scheduled on specific dates over an 8-month period. GPRS 3D laser scanned each area to capture the existing conduit, post-tensioning, rebar plan and sleeves prior to the slab being poured. This allowed the client to check the existing conditions for any irregularities.

Location: Houston, Texas Task: The client was in active build of an eight-story apartment complex in Houston, Texas. Each floor had five to six concrete pours scheduled on specific dates over an 8-month period. GPRS 3D laser scanned each area to capture the existing conduit, post-tensioning, rebar plan and sleeves prior to the slab being poured. This allowed the client to check the existing conditions for any irregularities. Challenge: The client was on a strict timeline and did not want delays in construction. They needed to quickly and accurate ensure that everything was in its correct location prior to pouring the slab. The client needed a 3D laser scanning company who could quickly mobilize to the site, conduct efficient laser scanning and provide point cloud data aligned to the design drawings within 24-48 hours. Solution: GPRS worked closely with the client. The scan technician mobilized to the site 1-2 times a week for 8 months and quickly captured the data without stalling the construction process. The scan technician set up the laser scanner at multiple locations around each slab and captured the data without disturbing the active construction site. GPRS’ team of in-house engineers quickly provided the point cloud alignment. The sub-centimeter point cloud data allowed the client to review the site conditions and make changes prior to the scheduled pour and without ever having to leave the office. Deliverable: GPRS’ Project Manager laser scanned each area and provided a colorized point cloud to the client. The colorized point cloud allowed the client to see color imagery, stitched over the point cloud to assess the area for misplaced sleeves, conduits and post-tension runs. This data was also aligned to the existing building plans to quickly find any issues. Added Value: The client relayed that GPRS saved them thousands of the dollars with just the first mobilization. They identified issues with the sleeve alignment from the home office and had them corrected prior to the slab being poured. Finding out that the sleeves were not in the correct location, even the day after the pour, would have cost the general contractor tens of thousands of dollars in coring costs alone. And if this problem would not have been discovered until framing and other elements went up could have cost exponentially more. Challenge: It was important to the client that the existing spatial layout was captured with great accuracy. When generating the mixed reality experience, computer-generated objects must precisely interact with the physical environment to sell the realism. Solution: The upper and lower stands, field topography, LED display screens, LED ribbon around stadium, two Hard Rock Stadium signs and roof structure were documented with a survey-grade Leica P40 ScanStation. In two days onsite, 172 laser scans of precise point cloud data was captured. TruePoint’s team of in-house engineers quickly generated a 3D Revit model for the client. The client planned to use Autodesk Maya, a 3D computer animation, modeling and rendering software to create an augmented reality (AR) simulation. Deliverables: TruePoint delivered point cloud files in .rcs format, a 3D Revit Model, and a FBX file. The client was also able to view the model progress using Autodesk A360, a web-browser application that allows engineers and project teams to work together more easily in an online workspace. Above & Below-Ground Data Capture for California School's HVAC Upgrades

In less than two hours on site, GPRS 3D Laser Scanning captured all aboveground features and utility field markings that were then used to provide a integrated above and below-ground plan view of the campus via 2D CAD drawings to plan HVAC upgrades, and have accurate existing condition documentation for future use.
Problem • A 12-year-old high school was replacing the piping on 16 HVAC units throughout the campus. • The piping for these units runs intricately in and out of buildings, and through retaining walls and mechanical yards. • The areas that the pipes thread through do not have any as-builts or existing plans. Solution • Using the Leica RTC360 laser scanner, a Project Manager captured elements of the surrounding campus and GPR markings in less than hours on site • This project was laser scanned in full color, allowing the client to easily visualize and identify structural elements, pipes, conduits, and concrete reinforcement points inside the point cloud • CAD engineers created 2D AutoCAD floor plans and exterior elevations, PDFs with and without the point cloud overlayed Benefits • The combination of laser scanning structural and ground penetrating radar markings provided the client a high definition 3D comprehensive view of the campus, including both visible and invisible elements • With 3D laser scan data, the client can verify the HVAC mechanical equipment with confidence knowing high accuracy instruments minimize position error throughout the 3D space • The client has the most up-to date, accurate and comprehensive information to design HVAC upgrades
