Location: Houston, Texas Task: GPRS provided laser scanning services for the Arena Theatre in Houston, Texas. The client desired to replace the current seating and did not have accurate drawings. The primary objective was to capture the existing dimensions of the seating, ramps, stairs, floor and stage area. The client requested the raw scan data to design the new layout of the seats. Challenge: The client has a remote laser scanner; however, due to inclement weather, could not make the flight to Houston. With a full concert schedule and a limited window of opportunity to laser scan, the client contacted GPRS to handle this project for them. Solutions: Since GPRS offers nationwide service, a Project Manager (PM) quickly mobilized to the site to perform laser scanning. Using the Leica HDS7000 Ultra-High-Speed Laser Scanner with Extended Range, the PM captured the existing conditions and delivered point cloud data to the client the next day. Deliverables: GPRS delivered raw scan data (.zfs files) to the client. No registration was required for this project. Added Value: GPRS worked quickly to provide laser scan data to the client, allowing them to begin designing the new seating for the Arena Theatre. The client trusted GPRS to provide the highest quality laser scan data in the shortest period of time. Location: Cincinnati, OH Task: GPRS 3D laser scanned 40,000 square feet of office space on the 6th floor of a building in Cincinnati. The area was recently renovated, and the objective was to capture MEP features to create an accurate as-built survey for the client. GPRS’ Project Manager used a Leica P40 ScanStation to capture 3D point cloud data and GPRS’ in-house engineers created a 3D CAD model. Challenge: The client wanted to complete the laser scan after the space had been framed in, but before the ceiling grid and tiles were installed. This gave the client a very limited window of time to capture the above ceiling piping. They wanted to quickly and accurately capture all MEP components and pipes, so they could install the ceiling and begin to populate the space. Solutions: GPRS maintained constant communication with the client to schedule the scanning just before ceiling grid was installed. With just a few days’ notice, the Project Manager mobilized to the site. GPRS’ experienced technician could ensure that 3D laser scan technology would completely and accurately capture the as-built site conditions. Laser scanning was completed while other contractors continued their work, and complex areas were scheduled during the hours when contractors were off-site. Deliverables: GPRS provided the client with Autodesk Recap files and Black and White Leica TruViews. Also, using preliminary EdgeWise extraction, GPRS engineers provided an AutoCAD .dwg file to the client. Added Value: The scan technician worked during off-peak times, which expedited GPRS’ time on site. Additionally, GPRS’ engineers are trained and experienced in numerous software applications and can create custom deliverables for each client quickly. In this case, ClearEdge 3D Edgewise software was used to process piping and quickly create a 3D model.

Header: A GPRS Case Study: 3D Laser Scanning a Grain Elevator in Michigan Location: Near Saginaw, Michigan Task: GPRS provided high-definition laser scanning services at a grain elevator in Michigan to capture the as-is conditions of the site. The client needed an accurate representation of the structural features to perform maintenance upgrades. They wanted specific documentation of the bucket elevator legs, fill conveyor bridges and tower supports. Challenge: This was a complex site that included the grain elevator, silos, bins, tanks, conveyors and bridges. The area laser scanned was near 180,000 square feet with heights over 110 feet. Traditional means of measuring would be difficult, costly, time consuming and potentially hazardous. Solutions: The Project Manager completed laser scanning in two days utilizing the Leica C10 and Leica P40 laser scanners. Varying the position of the scanners on the ground and between silos, the technician was able to capture this complex site from a variety of angles. Additionally, the Project Manager occupied elevated positions and tied those scans to the scans performed at grade. All the scanning could be safely performed from a distance without climbing the structure and without the need for renting lifts or scaffolding. Deliverables: The client received Autodesk Recap files of the scans (.rcs file format), black and white TruViews of the site, a 3D AutoCAD Model of the site, and section and plan views of the model laid onto the point cloud data with callouts. Added Value: GPRS’ CAD technicians communicated directly with the client to focus on key areas for detailed modeling to model exactly what was needed to keep costs down by avoiding unnecessary modeling effort. Using advanced extraction techniques and specialized software, GPRS was able to accurately represent structural features and deliver these to the client.
